We’re in the study relaxing after dinner. Diablo is reading her book, and I’m stretched out on the couch next to her. I can’t remember ever feeling this content. The more time we spend together, the further away the old me gets, and the more permanent this me, the one that is at peace just being with her, becomes.

“So, tell me honestly,” I grab the back of my head with both hands and stretch. “Did you like dinner, or are you just stroking my ego?”

She lowers the book and grins at my choice of words. “It was delicious. You were right; you’re a good cook. Is there anything you can’t do?”

“Not really,” I shrug. “You tend to pick up a few things after thousands of years.”

“It seems that humility isn’t one of them,” she says playfully, then turns back to reading.

I smirk. Even her humor, at my expense, makes me ache. “How is Shakespeare’s last hurrah?”

“It’s marvelous,” her eyes glisten.

“Is it a comedy, drama, or tragedy?”

“You’ll have to read it and find out,” she turns a page. “But I think it would’ve been a classic.”

“How do you feel about taking a break and listening to a little music?”

“Sure,” she closes her book and sets it down on the side table. “I probably should save a little of this for another day.”

I push up from the couch and make my way over to the entertainment center. Diablo follows and lays down in front of the fire. “What are we listening to?”

I toss her a pillow from a chair nearby, and she sets it on the floor and rests her head on it. “I thought I’d share a few of my favorites. You game?”

“Game on,” she grins, and I can’t help but do the same.

Over the next couple of hours, I play a handful of my favorite albums. It was part of my plan for tonight; to share my world and let Diablo in. And I have. She shows genuine interest as she listens to me talk about each album and even asks me to create a playlist of my favorite songs for her. But it’s time to make good on the promise I made this morning.

“What’s the name of this group again?” she asks, stretching languidly.

I open the case in my hand and pop the disc into the CD player. This album is not for me but for us, and what I know is on both of our minds. “It’s Nine Inch Nails, and the song I’m going to play is a little straightforward, so brace yourself.”

She props herself up on an elbow and looks at me, intrigued. “How so?”

I shoot her a devilish smile. “You’ll just have to listen and see.”

The song starts with an electronic beat, followed by sexually charged lyrics. But when the chorus hits, her brows shoot up to her hairline. “Did he just say...”

“Sure did,” I nod. “See what I mean?”

“That’s straightforward, alright,” she blushes.

“It’s foreplay’s wingman,” I wink.

“Well,” she swallows. “I wouldn’t know.”

I make my way over to where she’s lying, kneel between her legs, and lean down.
