Chapter Sixteen

Quinn’s large silver wolf body slammed onto the deck’s smooth floor. He whimpered as the stench of blood filled my nose. The pain that flowed from him into the pack bond was mind-numbing. I’d never experienced a connection like this before.

His whimpers pulled at me. He needed help, and damn it, someone had to do it. I’d started running toward him when another shot erupted.

No!

I had to protect him. He was part of my pack.

Annie, stop! Cyrus linked, his terror flowing into me. They’re shooting from the backup boat.

Realization crashed over me. They were positioned where they could see us through the trees. I spun in the opposite direction and saw the boat floating a hundred and fifty yards away, around a tree-covered bend.

They were using hunting rifles.

We couldn’t leave Quinn there to die.

Though I didn’t know the young man well, my few interactions with him had been positive. He tended to fade into the background, but he was a rock Darrell could lean on.

From the ground only a few feet from us, Wade chuckled darkly. His soulless eyes danced with mirth, despite his paralyzation.

He was enjoying our pain.

“I can’t hold them much longer!” Eliza yelled, her voice cracking.

Get down, Darrell linked urgently with our pack. They’re snipers.

Something smashed me hard against the floor. The buzzing in our connection informed me it was Cyrus, and he pushed me toward the side of the boat for shelter.

The link with Quinn began to grow cold, and I tried to scramble to my feet to reach him.

We have to stay down. Cyrus nuzzled my neck to calm me. If you run out there, you’ll get hit.

Wade is right there, too! The asshole’s focus was locked on me, and I could swear the corner of his mouth had tipped upward. He was lying near the edge of the boat, but he didn’t seem worried about being hit. Either he believed the others were aiming to kill, or he was fearless like Cyrus had described. I had a feeling it was a mixture of the two, but who the hell knew?

The gunfire between the vampires and the enemy raged on. This plan wasn’t as good as we’d thought, but we’d had no way of knowing the outcome. We were just trying to eliminate their getaway boats before the backup got here.

None of us could have known their backup had never planned on arriving.

What do we do? Cyrus had trained with them. Surely he’d have an idea about how to get out of this situation and save Quinn before it was too late.

Cyrus tensed. I…I don’t know. They never had snipers, or I would’ve prepared us for them.

Damn it. That meant someone had taken control after Dick’s and Saga’s deaths.

The sickening, salty taste that usually came before vomiting filled my mouth.

Blood from Quinn’s wound trickled toward us. From his position, I thought the injury was somewhere in his chest. There was so much blood, and my own turned ice cold.

I’m going to climb off you, but I need you to keep your head on straight, Cyrus linked.
