Chapter Fourteen

Brianna

“What was that?” I asked, pulling away from my two lovers.

“Maybe it worked,” Shade said, rolling away and picking up his clothes. We all started frantically pulling on our clothes. Footsteps echoed through the church, and I yanked on my pants and searched for my shirt.

“Everyone okay?” Rhyland asked the second they rounded the corner and came into view, Beckett on his heels.

“Fine,” I said as Noah tossed me my shirt. I pulled it on and stood to face the twins. “You guys?”

“Good,” Beckett said. “We heard something crash in the street, another part of the building falling. Just making sure…”

He didn’t finish his sentence, but I could see the panic receding in his eyes and being replaced with relief to see that we were all unharmed.

“Let’s get out of here,” Noah said. “Before the building collapses on us.”

“I’m not sure, but I think maybe it worked,” I said. “Something happened, anyway.”

“That’s for sure,” Shade said with a lazy grin in my direction. He tucked his tail down the back of his pants the same way someone might tuck in a shirttail, the movement casual and self-assured.

“How do we know if it worked?” Noah asked, frowning at me and my demon lover.

“I can’t travel the way Lucifer can,” Shade said, glancing sideways at me as we stepped out into the street. “But I bet you can.”

“If Hell is healed, does that mean I’ll be locked out?” I asked. “Or locked in once I get there?”

“It’s not sealed from demons coming or going, even if it’s healed,” Shade assured me. “It’s just not crumbling anymore.”

“Well, let’s hope it worked,” I say. “Then the demons will have no need to be up here, and they can go back to Hell. Maybe it even healed Heaven, too, and the angels can leave as well. None of you belong here—no offense—and both beings are tearing up the earth until it’s as ruined as Heaven and Hell, and there’s nowhere left for any of us.”

“That’s an accurate assessment,” Noah said. “No reason to take offense. It’s the truth.”

Before I could answer, the sound of galloping feet echoed down the street we were walking on, and a hulking form came hurtling around the corner of a building. Lady’s dark coat glimmered in the moonlight as she raced toward us.

“Shit,” Rhyland said. “Even though she loves you, that thing is fucking terrifying, Bri.”

“No, she’s not,” I protested. The air was nearly knocked out of me as Lady barreled into me, slathering my hands with kisses as I bent to pet her. “You’re not terrifying, are you?” I asked in my baby voice as I scratched her behind the ears. “She’s a perfect lady. Now, how’d you get out?”

“She must have escaped from the academy and followed your scent here,” Beckett said.

I straightened, my heart skipping a beat. “Let’s get back to the academy,” I said, trying to stay calm. “I need to make sure Gemma’s safe. If that earthquake caused any damage…”

We started off at a sprint back toward the academy.
