Chapter 12

I dropped behind the group. Too busy racing each other, Skeet and Junior didn’t even notice. It had taken a lot of self talk to force my pace to slow knowing what Skeet would say once he cemented his position at the top. I was about to be spat off the ladder all together. Christ, what the hell am I doing?

Hearing the rest of the group pounding and panting up the forest path, I ducked into the thicket and crouched low. The rest of the team sprinted past, harrying with each other and trying to improve their position. None saw me just off the path, hunched in the bushes. Once they passed, I turned and continued up the mountain slope.

The thick undergrowth made the climb tough. Creeper blanketed the ground, twisted around fallen logs and exposed roots. Twice my foot caught, threatening to send me over. After the face plant I did during my last training session, I slowed as much as I dared, conscious of time zipping by. Farther up and I felt sure no one would hear any noise I made, so I stopped the stealth and heaved, panted and crashed my way through the forest, disturbing birds, which flew away, twittering in fright.

Time was precious and this climb was taking too long, so I risked the fall and picked up my pace once more, finally topping out a short while later. I deviated left and headed for a clearing I knew was up ahead on account of the truck having sometimes brought us to the top of the mountain so we were forced uphill on our end run. I was familiar with the layout of the area and so had suggested here for our chat.

At the clearing, I found Remy sitting on a fallen tree trunk, breaking off bits of twig and throwing them into the bush. Spying me, he jumped down and sauntered over, extending his hand like we were old friends. Why was I doing this? Because Remy had piqued my curiosity. I couldn’t let what he said slip by without a proper explanation.

The tattoo on his extended hand was the first thing I noticed. Something I’d missed at Mojos.

“Glad I got your call.”

Initiates were given one day a week to make personal calls. Something I’d never bothered with before because there was no one to call. Trad, in Halls, gave me a quizzical look when I told him I’d be using my allotted time this week, then gave me a wink, perhaps thinking I’d found myself a girl after only one recreational.

“I’ve got minutes before I have to head back. So let’s finish this.”

“It may take a little time, but I’ll give the abbreviated version. Just curious, you didn’t by chance go telling anyone about our last meeting?”

“If I did, I wouldn’t tell you.”

“Its important we trust each other at the start. Otherwise this is not going to work for all involved.”

“Who is all?”

“In good time.”

“This is not about revenge. At least not against Ryker.
