Chapter Twelve

We should have known. We’d cloaked the city to move undetected—the Hell witches could have hidden their own numbers just as easily. Eliza and our witch allies hadn’t wanted to use their magic to search for the witches outside because that would have alerted Hell’s witches to a pending attack. Erin and her coven had been so busy channeling all their magic into securing the gates, cloaking the city, charging the crystals that kept the city hidden from human eyes, and adding extra layers of protection to the artifact building that they didn’t have any magic or time left to search for additional threats.

It didn’t matter. There was no preventing this. I just hoped we could kill a few demons right away to thin out their numbers.

The demons swarmed, their attention focused on the angels. They didn’t bother with the shifters and vampires who charged them. After all, they thought only people of angel descent could see them.

Azbogah tossed me a sword, and I clutched it firmly in my hand. Heart pounding, I readied myself for a fight. I’d trained harder in the last days than I had in centuries, and I felt even more confident in my abilities. However, so many of our residents had merely had a short stretch of training this past week, and I could only hope that I could do enough to save as many lives as possible.

I glanced at Azbogah and said, “You need to stay behind the pack. As soon as they realize who you are, they’ll be desperate to kill you.”

A tender smile crossed his face, and his eyes glistened. “That may be true, but when they realize who you are to him”—Azbogah gestured to Levi and then himself—“and me, they’ll be just as desperate to kill you.”

My heart skipped a beat. Though logically I realized who Azbogah was to me, he didn’t feel like my father. Only one angel had ever been that to me, but that didn’t change biology. Although most of these demons wouldn’t know who I was to Azbogah, they would all know I was Levi’s preordained and try to kill me.

He’s right. Levi’s desperation swelled between us.

There was no time to panic. It doesn’t matter. I was ready to fight. After all, I was a warrior and a protector of this city. I wouldn’t hide because things got complicated. I can’t sit idly by.

I know that, but that doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it, Levi countered as he flew next to me.

As a demon passed a wolf shifter in front of me, the shifter swung his sword, severing the demon’s head. The demons behind hesitated, blinking and processing what they’d seen.

A dark-haired vampire next to the wolf shifter swung his weapon at a demon close to him, slicing through its neck. The ones that had been watching screamed. “The shifters and vampires can see us!” one of them yelled. I couldn’t tell which because the swarm was so massive.

Our surprise advantage wouldn’t last long, and I barreled past the others, ready for action.
