Chapter Ten

Geneva was a bitter mess in the days following the discovery of Holly. She didn’t want to think her hold on Luke was weak, but she was at a loss for how to strengthen it. She wracked her brain for an appropriate work problem to ask him. He specialized in phobias if she remembered correctly. She thought, perhaps, she could take to him a problem of a made-up patient with a major phobia of commitment. It perfectly meshed her specialty with his, but it was a little too direct for Geneva to feel comfortable with.

She also felt it was probably a good idea to give him a little more space. While she knew that Luke was clearly not thinking about her, she also knew that absence made the heart grow fonder. Time apart might give them a chance to miss each other.

So, she laid low for a few weeks. She went to work and handled her patients, went to see a movie with her sister, and spent some time at Meat & Greet, researching more about Luke on her laptop.

The night before the first Shakespeare on the Square play was scheduled, Geneva decided to pay Holly Puckett a visit. Using her pictures on social media, it wasn’t hard to figure out that Holly spent most of her time at the mall and the diner where she worked.

Geneva made her way to the mall, hoping she would be able to spot Holly there. That would be the perfect place to break her self-esteem and send her running for the hills. By the time Geneva was finished with her, she wouldn’t want to go anywhere near a stage or camera.

She found the blonde woman in the company of a few friends, walking through the food court, each with an iced coffee in hand. Geneva listened to their shallow chatter as she sneakily followed them through the mall.

Holly and her friends all seemed to have bubbly, infectious laughter and beaming personalities. It annoyed her trying to keep up with them as they wandered through the mall. She wondered how people had the energy to be around her. Holly talked a mile and minute, and Geneva had long given up on eavesdropping on the conversation.

Eventually, the three of them walked into a boutique where the walls were lined with flared skirts and puff-sleeved dresses, as racks of homemade leatherwear filled the air with the warm, earthy smell of polished leather.

One of the girls reached for a leather cowboy hat and perched it atop her dainty head. The girls busted into a round of giggles as it slipped down to cover her eyes.

“Oh, look at this dress,” Holly said, reaching for a sky-blue dress hanging on the wall.

She pulled it down from the rack and held it up to her body for her friends’ approval. It was a hideous floral prairie dress in a pastel robin’s egg color that made Geneva want to vomit. The girls cooed and awed over it while Geneva busied herself with absently flipping through the hangers on a nearby rack.
