What we’re looking at is a new breed of food colonialists. In Argentina, the stark reality is that we have stopped producing food for ourselves. Fruit and vegetable production has fallen drastically – they now have to bring it into Buenos Aires from a thousand kilometres away. More than fifteen thousand dairy-producing farms have gone out of business in the last fifteen years. Milk production has declined so dramatically that at times there’s been talk of having to import it from Uruguay.

I asked him how all this had affected ordinary people.
