Your mother wrote back to her friend, but it was at least two years before another letter came in return. You were walking, even running, by then. You were safe enough in the store—you liked to touch things, but you did not grab. Still, we could not have you underfoot in a crowd. Your mother pushed crates together in the stockroom to make a pen. We would look in on you from time to time. You would be sitting talking softly on your blanket, or standing with your belly pressed to one of your wooden walls, reaching up to pull on Skygge’s ear or feel the soft flesh of his lip. Most often he was content to lie along the top of the crates. Sometimes, though, we found him down in the pen, the pair of you curled in sleep.

Bobbie had just locked up. She was about to go fetch you from the back when I handed her the envelope. She sat down on the stool to open it, as though she was suddenly tired. I busied myself with the mops, straightening them heads-up in their barrel, one eye on your mother as she read.

“Huh,” she said. “She’s in the rose room now.”

“Is that good?”

“Best room in the house after Vi’s.” She read on, shaking her head. “Still with Stanley.”

Just what did that mean, I wanted to ask, being with someone under such circumstances? The closest wolf made sheepdog? Natural enough if you were born into the life, as Kath may have been. Stanley, the madam’s son, certainly was. Your mother, too, though I learned that later. Everything Bobbie told me, she told me in her own time.
