Chapter Nine

Charlie

My brain wanted to scream bloody murder.

My body had other ideas.

A burst of frenzied energy hit me, obliterating all sense and logic. Before I could really register what I was doing, I’d ducked under Fox’s arm and hurled myself across the remaining space. I caught Thorn’s startled expression as I passed him. Meanwhile, a scream tore its way from my throat, a primal shriek that seemed to come from somewhere south of my toes. It resembled a raptor’s cry more than a human voice, and the alien sound made the wolf stutter its steps a few times before it resumed its charge.

A small voice in the back of my head was shrieking in reasonable terror, but whatever berserker rage had possessed me had no interest in listening. This son of a bitch had killed me. I didn’t care that it was basically a zombie—being controlled by some other entity—I was pissed and then some.

“Charlie, wait!” Thorn called after me.

Footsteps pounded the ground behind me, and I caught a brief glimpse of Thorn turning to follow me. His footfalls were drowned by the snarl of the wolf, a sound so huge, it seemed to quiver in my gut. The sound alone should have turned my legs to jelly, but I just shrieked back at it, the sound scraping my airways raw. I hadn’t felt this kind of righteous anger since I was a little girl and I’d caught a pair of boys tormenting a dog. I’d driven them both off with a wiffle-ball bat and nursed the beagle back to health. That was when I’d known I wanted to be a vet.

But as for this exact moment, if my heart was still working, it would have been pounding. I juked to the left before the wolf could snap its jaws shut on my head. Then I planted a foot and snapped my other leg up at an angle, putting every ounce of strength I had behind the blow. In my self-defense courses, that move would sometimes throw my instructor off balance, but most of the time, it just earned me a smirk when I overbalanced and fell on my ass.

Not this time, though. Something crunched when the kick connected. I actually felt it through my contact with the wolf. The thing’s bones broke apart like a twig beneath my ankle and rolled sickeningly inside its body. The force of the kick took the wolf off its paws and sent it ass over teakettle toward the tree line. For a second, I just stood there like a slack-jawed idiot, stunned at what I’d just done. And then I remembered just what I was—what I’d been turned into. There was knowing you’re a vampire, and then seeing the proof tumbling toward the swamp while howling in pain.

A shape blurred past me as I stood staring. I caught a glimpse of a long overcoat streaming behind a lean male figure before he came fully into focus. Fox. He came down on the far
