CHAPTER FIVE
In the morning you will say, "If only it were evening!" and in the evening, "If only it were morning!"—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see. - Deuteronomy 28:67
I headed straight for the livery, where Daed and I assumed they were storing our trailer, recognizing Winifred from the day before. I know I’m at the right place. “My daed,” I asked, nearly out of breath, “have you seen him?”
Winifred shrugged. “‘Course, few hours ago, when he left. You can see for yourself, the trailer is gone.”
I look over and, as far as I can tell, the buggy isn’t there. And there’s no sign of my daed either. “But ... this doesn’t make any sense, we were going to ... ”
“You were gonna what, missy?”
Of course, I can’t tell him we were going to sneak away without the trailer, in fear of our very lives. Anyway, I don’t feel very compelled to explain myself to this man, and I don’t have the time or the energy. There’s only one thought on my mind right now, and that’s to find my daed.
So I said, “What time did he—?”
“Few hours ago, like I said, just before sun-up.”
“And he just ... hopped in the trailer and rode off without saying anything?”
“Yer memory’s not so good, is it? Just last night Jonah gave him the horse, and the go-ahead to take the trailer. Nothin’ I could do or say about it.”
“Look, I just want to find my daed.”
“Then you better git to steppin’, ‘cause you sure ain’t gonna find him around here.” He cracked a wide, mean smile, his yellow teeth crusty with bits of his breakfast. “Unless of course, you’d like to stick around, make yourself comfortable. Heck, you might just be staying in Westington a might longer ‘n you thought. Might be about time you started to make some friends in town, yeah?”
I knew what he meant, of course, but I was not about to be intimidated by this awful man, much less charmed by him. So, I take his advice and leave while I can, heading straight for Jonah’s office in the government building near the town square. I don’t have any reason to think he’ll be there, but it’s the only place I can think to look. And if he’s not there, I reasoned, maybe I can dig up a few things about Westington that might help explain what’s going on.
Calm down, I told myself as I pushed through the town square; there must be an explanation. Daed took the trailer to do a little work on it, make sure it was road worthy.
No, I have to contradict myself, he’d have told me, left a note, something.
Well, I countered, he surely didn’t jump into that trailer and abandon me here. That’s impossible.
There are other options, of course, and they’re quick to hijack my train of thought. There is something strange going on in this place, just like Daed said, there’s no doubt about it.
