KANE WAS FEELING pretty fucking fantastic as they climbed into Sable’s truck to go to the festival. Sable, however, was another story. She’d gone from a state of blissed-out sass to spending twenty minutes engrossed in taking care of her plants and flowers, to being as edgy as the last person hired in a failing company.

She was pure country-girl beauty, in her cowgirl hat, long-sleeve black shirt, sexy leather fringed jacket, curve-hugging jeans, and her ever-present boots. “I need to make a quick stop to pick something up and drop off this gift for Deloris.” She set a gift bag on the seat between them and started the truck.

“No problem. Why didn’t you mention your plant and flower fetish when I showed you my rooftop sanctuary?”

“I don’t have a fetish. I told you I liked nature.” She drove out of the lot.

“That’s a lot of nature.”

“Morgyn filled my place with plants over the last few years. She said it’s good for my soul to nurture something.”

“And the flowers?”

“They were Deloris’s. She knew she’d forget to water them, and even though I thought she should have them in her room and let the staff help care for them, she said she would rather they were with me. I’m just trying to keep them all alive.”

She didn’t seem that cavalier when she was studying each one, whispering as she picked off dead leaves and watered them. “If you don’t like caring for them, why not give them to someone who does?”

“Because they’re important to Morgyn and Deloris, so…” She shrugged.

“They’re important to you.”

“I guess.”

“Is that why you talk to them?”

“I don’t talk to them,” she snapped.

“So you were whispering to yourself when you were watering them?”

“You’re such a pain. I talk to them sometimes, okay?” She said it sharply, but she was smiling. “It helps them grow.”

“I think it’s great. Do you name them?”

She gave him a deadpan look, but laughter burst from her lips. “I wouldn’t tell you if I did.”

“Hey, no judgment here. But who’s taking care of your brood while you’re on tour?”

“My brood?” she asked as they drove into a neighboring town. “Morgyn, while she’s in town, and then my mom will take over.”

“Family is the best. I happen to agree with Morgyn, by the way. It’s good for us to nurture things.”

“Says the guy who probably has an entire staff to water his plants.”

“Yes, I do, but I nurture my businesses.”

She shook her head.

“I noticed the tapestry behind your bed. Did your sister make it?”

“Yes.”

“Is it supposed to be you?”

She shrugged, but the pink staining her cheeks told him it was. She pulled over in front of a diner, and he spotted a florist at the end of the block.

“I need to run in and pick up a pie for Deloris. Do you want anything?”

“You? Pie?” He arched a brow. “Need I say more?”

“Now, there’s a thought.” A sexy smile lit up her face. “But keep it in your pants, BDK. This pie is for Deloris. Lloyd used to bring her cherry pie and candy on Valentine’s Day.
