Chapter 26

After a two-and-a-half-hour charter flight, a private car met us at the airport and ushered us to downtown Portland, where Quantum Records is located. It’s all happening pretty fast; one minute, we’re playing live in a dive bar downtown LA, and the next, we’ve become an online sensation, and our small gig from several days ago has close to three million views.

Jagger and Haze are convinced that aligning with a smaller indie record company, particularly one that specializes in working with the kind of music we’re making, would be the best option for us. While I may not be as business savvy as they are, the logic behind this choice makes sense, especially if it ensures the preservation of our creative freedom. On the way over, I took the initiative to research this company, discovering their reputation for an innovative approach to promoting artists. It’ll be interesting to see what they want to offer us.

The meeting room we’re in hums with anticipation as we sit across the executives of Quantum. The atmosphere is charged with excitement and nervous energy as we’re about to discuss the possibility of signing a record deal.

To be honest, I can’t help but still feel uneasy, especially considering our last encounter with Oliver Jones and the record label he wanted us to sign up with. Plus, my past experiences with negative press hang over me like a bad omen everywhere I go.

“We absolutely love what you’re doing so far,” declares Mark, the label’s CEO. “Your hard rock vibe is exactly what we’ve been looking for, and we believe we can create something exceptional together.”

I appreciate their enthusiasm for our sound and style but remain concerned. Charms and verbal assurances are valued, but the real substance and reliability come from the black-and-white words of a well-drafted agreement.

“I want you to know, Eden, that we appreciate your talent and artistic expression,” Sarah, one of the execs sitting opposite me, catches my eye and offers me a warm smile. “We’re here to support you, and we won't tolerate any form of bullying or mobbing towards our artists. Your music and creativity are what matter most to us."

There is a sense of relief from her words, and I appreciate her reassurance. It’s a refreshing departure from the harsh criticisms I faced in the past.

"By the way, I have to say, I love your look. It's powerful and fits the band's image perfectly," Sarah adds.

The execs lay out their vision for Velocity Vortex, proposing to release our first single online to build anticipation for the upcoming album.

"We've got a killer studio producer lined up who specializes in hard rock," adds James, the A&R representative. "They'll help enhance your sound without compromising what makes Velocity Vortex so unique."

I exchange glances with the other four on my side of the table, and I think we all sense this partnership is a golden opportunity.

As our meeting concludes, Mark hands over a business card to Jagger.

“We recommend finding a dedicated manager outside the band to handle the logistics and negotiations.
