September

a.k.a. The Launch of the Fall Season

5

Spencer

Labor Day always had a sense of melancholy ingrained in it for Spencer. It was the end of summer. Even if September stayed warm, the world had moved on. No more beaches, no more pools, no more volleyball.

But as he sat on a boat with his friends cruising around Lake Michigan on a cloudless warm Sunday afternoon, he felt excitement for the season to come.

“I can’t believe summer’s over,” Ryan said. He cracked open a beer and handed it to Spencer before cracking one open for himself.

“Summer came to an abrupt end for me weeks ago.” Spencer tapped at his cast.

“That sucks so much, man. I wish you’d been able to play the rest of the season. We needed you.”

That they did. Beach Please ended the season with a losing record. Spencer wished he could’ve played because he knew they were better than some of their opponents. Still, judging by the dancing and drinking and laughing going on around him, his teammates were not bummed about the outcome.

One of his friends turned up the sound on their Spotify so that pulsating beats reverberated off the water. A mini dance party had broken out in the small space at the front of the boat. Ryan and Spencer watched on like elder statesmen.

“Are you coming with us to Needler’s party at Hollywood Beach later?” Ryan asked.

“Can’t.”

“You got plans?” Ryan’s eyebrows jumped.

Spencer maintained his poker face, refusing to give him the satisfaction. “Patrick needs help with something.”

“Patrick?”

“The guy who lives across the hall from me.”

“Oh, right.” Ryan nodded with recognition. “He was kinda weird, wasn’t he?”

“No, man. He’s cool.” Spencer felt his insides boil over the insult. A lot had changed since the Fourth of July.

A lot.

Since they had sex two weeks ago, they, well...continued having more sex, testing the limits both of Spencer’s broken foot and Patrick’s furniture. Spencer had hooked up with guys in the past, and by this point, he’d gotten bored with them. But Patrick proved to be different. Even though they saw each other every day to commute, and several nights to screw, Spencer couldn’t get enough of Patrick’s blazing green eyes and his warm smile and his Hoover-like mouth and his borderline-academic interest in the fall season.

“He seems more than cool,” Ryan said almost like a question, reading whatever look was on his face. “Is there more to the story here?”

There was sex and scented candles, but he hesitated to tell Ryan about either. Leave it to Ryan to want to spin some physical chemistry into a relationship. Relationships would ruin all the good things he and Patrick had going for them. Relationships handcuffed people together, and Spencer enjoyed having his freedom. He didn’t want to be part of a couple that people only referenced by both names. Oh, John and Sam are coming over later. Mike and Phil really liked that movie. It was like as soon as marriage equality became the law, every gay man decided he had to go find a husband.
