Their dinner at a new Asian-fusion restaurant was made memorable by the company. Brynjar found he could not stop staring at Alice, who seemed to purposely avoid his eyes.

She’s worried that it didn’t mean anything, he realized after the third time he tried to steal her gaze but failed. I need to set her straight.

“Alice…” he murmured, placing his napkin over his finished plate. He reached across the table to touch her hands, but she seemed reluctant to let him. “Would you please look at me?”

She straightened her shoulders and met his eyes evenly, but he could sense her reservation across the table.

“Hm?” she said, trying to sound nonchalant.

“I’m really glad you’re here with me,” he said gruffly. Instantly, her face softened, and her defiant posture relaxed. “I couldn’t have asked for better company.”

“Oh.”

He couldn’t help but laugh at her response.

“Is that a good ‘oh’ or a bad ‘oh’?” he teased. She flushed and against the flickering glow of string lights and candle glow, she looked ethereal. Her olive complexion glowed, and her eyes seemed dark pools of ink as he studied her face. He felt another surge of excitement course through him. Suddenly, he wanted to bring her back up to the room to taste her and feel how perfectly they fit together all over again.

“I-I wasn’t expecting it,” she admitted. “I’m glad you brought me too.”

“Then why do you look so worried?” he asked gently. Alice’s mouth parted and closed before again opening.

“I’m processing,” she finally offered. Brynjar could not help but whoop with laughter, ignoring the stares of the other patrons.

“It’s a lot to process,” he conceded when Alice also grinned. “But in a good way, right?”

Alice’s expression softened more, and she sighed.

“I don’t know,” she replied honestly. “Is it?”

Brynjar squeezed her fingers reassuringly, even though he was not entirely sure from where he found the confidence. He had his doubts too about getting involved with a human. Alice was not the first woman he had ever been with, but he could not recall a time when the emotions were so strong.

At night when he slept, hers was often the last image in his mind before he fell asleep, and in the mornings, he looked forward to seeing her at the office. There was no point in denying it any longer. Their “deal” had become something very real.

But can it last?

He was not a fool. Even if Alice accepted his deepest, darkest secrets, she would eventually die as a mortal.

Clara was a human too until she was granted immortality. Perhaps Bjorn can help Alice with that too.

Brynjar knew he was getting ahead of himself, that their relationship had only reached intimacy two hours before. Alice still had no idea who he was or of what he was capable.

“You have a thousand different expressions on your face right now,” Alice told him with a small sigh. “If you’re worried that I’m going to expect something from you—”

“I’m not worried about a damned thing,” Brynjar interjected honestly. “I’m just enjoying this amazing crab dinner with a beautiful woman in Miami.
