FOURTEEN

There is a song playing softly through my speakers. I reach to grab my phone from under the pillow to switch off the alarm, except I don’t feel my phone. Hmm. Maybe I left it on our nightstand? I yawn.

“Loren? You up?” I lift my hand to bang my fist on the slats of wood under the top bunk, but I don’t feel anything above me. What the heck is going on? “Lo?”

“Are you playing charades? Talking to spirits? Who’s Lo?”

My eyes pop open. Randy is standing at the foot of Zay-Zay’s massive king-size bed, drinking something green from a plastic cup.

I sit up and rub my eyes, looking around the expansive two-story master suite like I’m seeing it for the first time.

“Hey, Randy.” I slap my hand against my forehead. “I literally forgot where I was.”

“You’re in Malibu, California. How’d you sleep?” He drinks from the straw of his green cup. “You want some breakfast before your date?”

That’s right. It’s my date today. The one where I get to wear the half-a-million-dollar engagement ring, hang out with the Academy Award–winning Taylor Thompson Lee, and be paraded around town by Koi Kalawai‘a. “You sure I’m awake? I swear this all feels like a dream.”

“Want me to pinch you?”

“That’s ok.” I yawn. “I think I’ll take you up on that breakfast. What’s on the menu?”

“This.” He holds up his other hand. Presenting a second cup of green juice.

That’s my breakfast?

“Don’t knock it till you try it. It’s kale, spinach, lime, spirulina, some other stuff I can’t pronounce. It’s good.”

He hands me my cup, and I take a sip from the metal straw. It tastes like grass mixed with lemon and lime . . . and dirt. Maybe a banana? Certainly not an acceptable breakfast by any stretch of the imagination.

“See? Good, right?”

“Uh, yeah. Yum.” I place it on the end table beside the bed.

“Zay’s chef is here preparing food for the week. Just FYI, his name is Caleb. He’s the one that made the smoothie. Lovelie is here cleaning. I swear that lady never leaves.”

Lovelie. She must be the lady from last night. The one who speaks Creole.

Randy sips from his straw again. “And Koi is here too.”

What?! I yank the covers off and swing my legs out of bed. “What do you mean Koi is here? Why is he here so early?”

“Y’all supposed to be leavin’ at eleven.”

“What time is it now?”

“Ten forty-five.”

Omigosh, I overslept! I jump off the bed. “Why didn’t you guys wake me?”

“I was gonna. Except Aish said to let you sleep so your face wouldn’t be puffy.”

“Is my face puffy?” I grab at my cheeks. “I need to shower. My hair’s a mess. What am I wearing?” I pace back and forth beside the bed. “Did you pick out a dress? Should I pick something out? Oh gosh, Randy. Please tell Koi I’m sorry.”

Randy laughs. “Red, girl, calm down. You’re unofficially ‘officially’ Zay. She is always late. Nothing new for Koi. He’s used to waiting. I’ll have you ready in no time.
