Nine

Alizon walked into the police station and stopped at the counter where Reuben Nash sat. “Officer Nash, I need to speak with Sebastian please.” Alizon tried to quell her impatience but Reuben was not the most professional of people.

“Did you bring me any donuts? I’ll let him know you’re here if you brought me some donuts.” Reuben leaned forward and his stomach rested on the counter he leaned against. The buttons on his stained shirt strained to stay together.

“By the looks of the jelly stains, you’ve already imbibed a few too many. Don’t make me call Martha and tell her you’re cheating on your diet again. Plus, it’s against the law to bribe or blackmail people. I’m pretty sure you’re bordering the line on one of those.” Alizon tried to keep a straight face but he looked so dejected she had to throw him a bone. “You tell the Chief I’m here and I will send you two donuts.” She held a hand up before he could bargain. “No more than two. I’m not willing to deal with the wrath of Martha today.”

Reuben sighed and Alizon eyed the buttons on his shirt again as they bulged with the inhale of breath he took. “You drive a hard bargain ma’am, but you win.”

Alizon smothered a laugh, but she could see the twinkle in his eyes. He was a big softy and would push the limits as long as he could. He turned on his chair and yelled across the station. “Chief, Alizon Bishop is here to see you. Can we arrest her yet? She didn’t bring any donuts in, not even candy from her shop!”

Alizon gasped. “Traitor, just for that I’m only going to get you one donut and no jelly!” It was Rueben’s turn to gasp this time.

“Alizon you always get him riled up, come on back and give the big man a break.” The Chief stood in the doorway to his office and waved to her. Alizon walked around the counter and waited for Reuben to buzz her through the door. She looked over to him while he smirked. “You’re going to lose the last donut if you don’t let me in now. Don’t make me curse you. I can make it so donuts taste like broccoli for the rest of your life if you aren’t nice to me.” The door buzzed and she laughed as she went through.

Chief Thayer shook his head and waited for her to make her way over to him. “Come in and sit down. What brings you to my office today?”

Alizon sat in a chair across from him and waved her hand. The two letters appeared on his desk and she sat back while he looked them over.

“Start from the beginning and tell me when you received these and where.” The chief picked up a pen and pulled out a notebook. Alizon chuckled, Gargoyles could be so old school sometimes, but she appreciated the sentiment.

“The first letter, the formal one, was delivered to my shop yesterday.
