COMBAT USE DURING WORLD WAR II

First blood

Units such as the Commandos must be used, to keep the troops motivated and to fulfill their mission of harassing the enemy and building morale at home. The earliest Commando raid, in the area around Boulogne, was carried out on June 23/24, 1940, the very night France surrendered. Another raid was carried out on Guernsey on the night of July 14/15, 1940. These early raids were mostly symbolic but did allow the fledgling Commandos to learn a few lessons. From 1941, however, missions became bolder. One of the earliest combat deployments of the F-S was during Operation Colossus, the airborne raid of February 10, 1941, against the Tragino aqueduct near Calitri in southern Italy.
