Like old times, I thought as I settled at the café table with a large glass container of bubbling coffee over a heatless flame at the center, something new that the place wanted to try to gain customers. So far, I hadn’t tasted a sip, but the presentation was satisfying. I might have sat there with my chin balanced on my hands watching it bubble for the rest of the day.

Especially given my headache from all that reading.

Melia had ordered our favorite appetizer of deep-fried squash blossom, and the steaming platter rested alongside the coffee with our three matching espresso cups ready to fill. The server with the alligator skin assured us that once the chocolate-colored bloom in the center of the bubbling coffee opened, it would be ready.

“I haven’t seen that look on your face for a long time,” Melia said, picking at one of the blossoms and finding it too hot to eat, her fingers scalded.

“What look?” I asked.

“You’re happy. After the shit-storm that’s followed since we met, it seems like you haven’t had an opportunity to really be yourself in a long time.” She trailed her eyes from me to Mike and back again. “I think I can guess the source of the change.”

He didn’t seem bothered in the slightest at her insinuation, only sat back in his chair with his arms folded over his chest.

“You’re not wrong.” The moment the bloom opened, I grabbed the coffee pot and doled out the dark roast with chicory and several spices only found in Faerie.

“It’s good to have the gang back together even if it’s still for a kind of shit-storm subject,” Mike agreed. “It’s been too long since things felt normal.”

That was a good word for it. Normal. We could pretend, for a few hours anyway, that we were students and our greatest worry was an exam or two.

Melia reached across the table and placed her hand over mine. “If the gang is really back, then we’re going to get to the bottom of this and figure out a way to solve the murder once and for all.” Her smile turned nuclear. “Trust me. There’s no better team!”

She looked so self-assured that I automatically wanted to believe her. Melia always had that air about her: smart and studious but the kind of person who lit up a room when they entered. She’d made a great mentor and an even better friend. It did feel good, too.

Being back together put me on top of the world, and confident.

Plus Mike resting in his seat beside me, shifting now so that his arms crossed behind his head and his knee brushing mine. It filled me with relief. Warm, delicious relief that things were almost back to the status quo between us. Add Melia in and the circle really was complete.

“What did you find out from your meeting with Elias the other day?” Melia asked.

Mike shot me a questioning look and I filled him in on what had happened with the journalist and his connection to Madam Muerte.
