I had learned my lesson on our first date, a fact that Maren noticed right away.

“This place is much more… relaxed,” she commented as we were seated at the restaurant table. Her eyes lingered on some of the neighboring tables a little longer than they should, but when I turned to look, no one was staring back.

“I think I know you a bit better now,” I agreed. “I want you to be comfortable.”

“I am,” she answered quickly, putting her menu down, away from her face. “You’ve done so much for me.”

“Stop that,” I growled. “Stop thanking me and acting like I’m doing you some big favor.”

She sat back and studied me. “But you are, aren’t you? I mean, the move, the clothes, these fancy dinners… I’m not even working right now.”

I frowned slightly. “You’re still doing the shows at the castle, aren’t you?”

She pressed her lips together, closing her menu entirely. “Are you purposely avoiding talking about me going back to Maximo’s?”

Consciously, I hadn’t realized I was doing that, but now that she mentioned it, I suppose I had put the subject on the back burner.

“What do you want to do?” I asked evenly, trying not to show her how I really felt about the subject. The truth was, I didn’t want her away from me, not even for work.

“I don’t think I should just sit around the castle and do nothing,” Maren sighed. “It doesn’t feel right.”

“I’ve given you a credit card, and money goes into your bank account every week. Besides, you have the shows at the castle,” I reminded her quickly, and she nodded.

“But that’s only one night.”

“Surely you have hobbies that you want to explore,” I pressed.

She cocked her head to the side and nodded. “I’ve always enjoyed making jewelry. I sell some of it online sometimes. It’s what I was doing before I started at Maximo’s, but I couldn’t quite get it to take off.”

“Jewelry? Really?” I was impressed. Every day, I seemed to learn more about this beautiful creature who had swept into my life.

“Mostly beaded necklaces and bracelets, but they’re loaded with wish magic. Every one of them has a secret spell in them, and you don’t know what you’ll get until you open them up on delivery.”

I laughed, reaching across the table to squeeze her fingers. “Then I’ll ensure you have a studio where you can work. Does that satisfy your need to stay busy?”

Maren nodded. “I think so,” she answered slowly. “I’ve never had the opportunity to work on my jewelry full time.”

Bringing her fingers to my lips, I smiled at her. “You’ll have opportunities you never dreamed about.”

“I’m beginning to see that,” she said, her eyes shining.

Over the flickering of candlelight, we enjoyed a bottle of wine and pasta, the room around us fading into the background. All I could see was Maren, and all I could think about was that negligée underneath her clothes.

Half drunk on wine, we returned to the car, my hands already on her hips to lay her back against the seat the moment the door closed behind us.
