Jerrek couldn’t believe his eyes. This gathering was twice the size of the previous market. Dozens of creatures stood around platforms, bidding on fae hostages. Anger grew quickly within him. His heart rate shot up, breathing became almost panting. This was what happened before his beast broke through the first time.

“Hey,” Kaia whispered, placing her hand on his shoulder, “you all right?”

Instantly his body calmed, his creature backing down. He could think logically again. Had she done that? Not only her voice, but her touch soothed him. This was the most incredible woman he’d ever met. His other half nodded.

“Uh,” he said, coming back to his senses, “we need to find the ringleader.” He glanced at the mob. That wasn’t going to be easy. He needed to be on the ground to talk to others. “I have an idea,” he said, “and you’re not going to like it.”

After some time getting her to finally agree, they snuck into the crowd as slave and owner. Her dress was split down the front all the way to her belly button. He understood why she didn’t like it. He didn’t want other men staring at her, but there wasn’t much choice if they wanted to put a permanent stop to all this. His animal half wasn’t happy either but remained calm for the moment. He could feel him pushing under his skin. He wanted to kill everyone male there who dared look at their woman.

For looks, he conjured a rope that tied around her wrist. He wanted to be sure everyone knew she belonged to him. Mate floated through his thoughts. He wasn’t sure if it was from him or his beast. Either way, he wasn’t mating her. She didn’t have the rock.

As they walked through, people stopped to watch Kaia go by. She held her head high, and her shoulders back—mainly because when she slumped, the dress hung open. He’d be fine with that as long as they were alone in his room. Damnation, where were those thoughts coming from?

He hadn’t had sex in a long time. He’d been too busy trying to be king to want a woman. At night when he was in bed, he was stressed out thinking about the next day. Female companionship revolved around his mother and sister.

A rough-looking fae with a scar down his cheek stopped him with a hand on his shoulder. His gryphon growled. This fae was not a good person. He shrugged the hand off his shoulder and gave the fae a scowl for touching him.

“Are you selling her?” he asked. “I’ll pay you a hundred gold coins to walk away.”

Fury so deep erupted from him that he took a step to rip the piece of shit’s head from his body. Then a warm hand touched his arm and his anger melted.

“Maybe,” he growled. “Who is the leader of this market? I wish to speak to him.”

The fae stared at him for a moment then spit to the side. “The mage with no hair.
