People who remain friends with exes on Facebook may have a lower capacity to get over it and move on than those who do not remain Facebook friends. Constantly lurking around an ex’s Facebook page may lead to higher levels of distress about the breakup, lowered self-esteem, continued sexual longing for the ex, and difficulties in growing beyond the breakup. It’s important to note that I don’t believe that Facebook causes these issues; it’s more likely that people who have a hard time moving past a breakup will use Facebook to keep tabs on their ex and wallow in their sadness over the breakup. For these people, the best remedy for their heartbreak may be a complete disconnect with their ex, both on Facebook and in the offline world. And sometimes a helpful way to move beyond a failed relationship may be to have a temporary breakup with Facebook as well.
