Using Your Family History to Clarify Your

Feelings about Changing Looks

Recall how your parents saw you as a young girl. What words were used when you were introduced to others? For example, were you called the cutie pie, princess, fatty, smarty pants?

Did your looks play a small or large role in your relationship to your family?

Were there any other significant people in your childhood that may have had a role in how you saw yourself?

Describe your mother’s appearance when she was a young woman (either from memory or photographs). If she is still living, how does she look now? How would you describe your mother’s sense of femininity?

Did you want to be like her? Do you want to be like her now?

Do you recall a time you saw yourself as pretty? As unattractive? Do you have a memory when someone else saw you as pretty?

Take a look at pictures of yourself when you were a child, an adolescent. Hold them side by side to pictures of yourself now. Note your reaction.

Take a look at pictures of your mom when she was your age now. Think about how you feel looking at these pictures.
