Like fine wines, congressmen become more valuable with age. Buying a first-termer isn’t going to get you much, but it’s not a bad starter-congressman. A ten- or twenty-termer is going to be a much richer experience, but it’s really for the connoisseur.

Buying a congressman is not something you just jump into. It can be pricey, and, unfortunately, there is, as yet, no return policy. You can’t even get House or Senate credit if you think you’ve bought a bum congressman. One way to minimize the risk is to talk to some of the congressman’s past owners. Did they get what they thought they were paying for? Would they purchase one again? Would they recommend the congressman to their friends and colleagues?
