SUMMER

“It’s fine, love,” Floyd said, pulling me into him and pressing a kiss to my forehead, “We’ll work it out.”

Despite him trying to mask his annoyance, I knew that it was not, in fact, fine. This was the third time in the past few months that my wasband had actively worked to sabotage plans I had. First it was him randomly sending his mother on an all-expense paid vacation after she and I had worked out the girls spending a weekend that they normally stayed with me at her house a few months ago. She’d reached out directly to set it up after complaining about not having seen them in a while since Ted rarely took them to her place when they were with him. Then it was Ted forgetting that he was supposed to have them for Easter, causing Floyd and I to have to change our plans for spending the holiday weekend up in New York enjoying ourselves; concluding with an Easter brunch with Jane, Nigel, and Deuce. This time though? This was the final straw.

The girls were to be spending an extended weekend with him and his family at their annual reunion for the 4th of July, so Floyd and I had planned a cute little weekend getaway to Martha’s Vineyard. I had a coworker who offered his family’s place to me for a getaway since he’d decided against staying there for the holiday. Now, a mere two days before all of this was supposed to unfold, Ted was calling me saying that he wouldn’t be able to get the girls because he had a work emergency come up so he would be working the entire holiday weekend and not going to his family’s reunion. And while I could have just called my former mother-in-law to see if the girls would be able to go to the reunion with her, I knew I didn’t want to hear her mouth about having raised all of her children and not being responsible for anyone else’s. She was so annoying with her mercurial moods, honestly—one minute wanting to be the perfect, doting grandmother and the next complaining when extenuating circumstances required her to be a grandmother on a timetable that she hadn’t constructed.

The place where we were staying on the Vineyard belonged to a friend’s family, so cancelling the trip altogether wouldn’t net a loss of money since they’d insisted that I not pay them. It would, however, net a loss of Floyd and I having some much needed alone time. Since my barbecue in the spring, he’d become more of a fixture around my place and in my life in general. My girls now knew him as “mommy’s boyfriend” and his presence around the house for dinners, the occasional breakfast, and family movie nights wasn’t out of the ordinary.
