Chapter Fourteen

Anna watched the dawn, the sun rising over the desert, the sound of a cricket somewhere in the yard. The long swing was old, but holding, and it lay far from the house.

They’d talked until Adam had to excuse himself to get some rest and Anna felt the need of it herself but couldn’t. Not when she’d left so much out of her side of the conversation.

Coming over and resting his hands above his head on the bar holding the swing, Angus stared at her, smiling. “That light on your face is gorgeous.”

“Any light on my face is gorgeous, according to you.”

“Maybe that’s what love does.”

She reminisced on their rocky and rough start. “Man, I hated you.”

“You never hated me,” he countered. “You were definitely intrigued by me.”

The first time they’d kissed, it was in the middle of a screaming match. “Yeah, I hated you until I didn’t. You’re right though. I did always find you intriguing.”

Sitting next to her, he grabbed her hand, roughly kissing her fingers. “Well, you don’t hate me now, right?”

“No. You make me madder than hell sometimes, but I don’t hate you.”

“Why didn’t you tell him? About…you know…”

She didn’t bring any of it into her mind, fearing that for once, one of the vampires would read her thoughts. “He’ll know when we’re all safe. Until then, he’s got enough on his plate.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. He really loves that vampire. I saw in his face. I don’t think I could stand it if I had to be without you for eight or nine years.”

“That’s a blink of an eye to them. I thought, you know, other vampires, that they could kill so easily because life didn’t mean so much. If you have an end date, you tend to love it a little more. You cherish things, like we cherish each other and our shared time together, but Adam, he’s different. He misses him every day. If he was guaranteed a million years with Neku, he’d still miss him as much. I feel so badly for him.”

Angus leaned over to kiss her and ended up kissing her for a few minutes while she basked in the love of him. Angus had been a pompous ass when they’d met. Handsome, surely, but he didn’t seem to care about anything much except his own needs. She was very wrong about him, and he was wrong about her. When they finally realized that they knew they belonged together.

“To fix so much, we need to get him. We need that damn vampire.”

“It seems he’s ready for us to find him. Turning Matilda, that was a calling card.”

“Then we’ll pick up the damn phone.”

Once they got a few hours rest, Anna called the rest of her coven. Each one that popped in by teleportation, she grew heavier in her heart for the one that would never come. As she felt their embraces, she longed for the warm embrace of Matilda.
