TRIAL, TEST, … OR OPEN DOOR?

One of the things we should ask ourselves when the devil releases his demonic agents against us is the following question: “Is this a trial or a test, or did I open a door to the enemy?” When we open doors to the enemy, we give the devil legal rights over that part of our life, creating strongholds that need to be broken.

Let me explain these steps further. A trial is a situation or circumstance that lasts for a long period of time, such as we read about in the book of Job. Historians say that Job’s trial lasted a year. A trial could be many things, such as a financial setback, a marriage struggle, an illness or infirmity—such as when I went blind again in 2002, for no reason at all; it was an attack from the devil. That’s when we have to make a decision: Either we trust God through the trial or we collapse.

A test is something that has a shorter season of attack, something we can go through in days or weeks, depending on how we handle ourselves in the battle. A test could be a bad day at work, or a weeklong series of bad situations, or small circumstances that frustrate, anger, or depress you. An example of a test would be falling out at work with a co-worker, or perhaps an unsaved family member offends you. How you react can either glorify God or open doors to the enemy. You know that you have passed the test when you either humble yourself and accept the situation, or you turn away from it and leave with peace in your heart, knowing you did what God expected you to do.

An open door is when we step out of the will of God and so give the devil a legal right to have the upper hand over us.

It is important to identify which of these you are confronting, so you can prepare for battle and trust God for your victory. If you’re not sure, ask the Lord to reveal the answer to you, but usually there are distinguishing characteristics to each.

The snares of the devil could be watching unholy television shows and movies, because the devil is the prince of the air (he controls the media and has domain over it); what you speak out of your mouth, because the devil is after your words; or any gossip you entertain that comes in through your ears that contaminates your spirit man. Another very common open door that many Christians allow is being ensnared by the filth of pornography. The Bible makes it clear that you must guard your eye gate, ear gate, and mouth gate because these are portals that give the enemy legal rights to create strongholds in your life and entrapments that will damage your walk in the Light with the Lord Jesus Christ.

One of the things the devil doesn’t want the believer to know is that the victory was already won at the Cross of Jesus Christ.
