CHILD LABOR
As he continued to deliver his illustrated lectures and write articles, Jacob Riis sometimes used pictures from other photographers, including Lewis Hine. Riis bought 11 of Hineâs photos to illustrate one of his magazine articles.
Unlike Riis, Hine considered himself an artist as well as a reformer. Hine was also trained as a sociologist, someone who studies the social relationships between people and the institutions they create to make society work. Hine believed in the power of experts to document a problem and offer solutions for government to carry out. While Riis believed governments could make some positive changes, he thought good Christians like himself should give to charities as a way to solve many problems.
When Riisâ career was nearing an end, Hine was traveling the country to document working conditions in factories and mines. He was particularly interested in showing the harsh conditions children faced in those places. At the time, the United States did not have strict laws against forcing children to work at jobs for adults. As with Riis, Hineâs images helped change peopleâs attitudes about what was acceptable, and that led to reforms. The two men are sometimes linked because of their efforts for reform. Both men are considered part of a tradition of photojournalism that focuses on social issues.
