The ten months that followed the Ballard expedition are still something of a blur. Immediately after returning from Kea I found myself on a six-month shoot in Rome on Daylight, an improbable piece of Hollywood hokum with Sylvester Stallone in a flooded New York traffic tunnel, followed by two months in London on London Suite, a new Neil Simon teleplay. Something must have gone very right on that project as that summer I then found myself working for the same production company, appropriately enough on a television adaptation of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Truth be told, ours was not a particularly faithful treatment – in fact, I am pretty sure that Jules Verne would have been spinning in his grave if he could see what our screenwriters were doing to his literary classic – but the fact that I was once again working on a project with a seagoing theme meant that my thoughts were, perhaps inevitably, beginning to drift back to the Britannic. Never in my wildest dreams, though, was I prepared for what was to come.
