The father follows the conventions of the scientific explorer, providing a template for young readers as to how they should proceed in the future. He has a stock of useful knowledge and applies this by further experimentation and observation. Most importantly, he records his newly gained knowledge and collects specimens of the unusual. There is none of the paranoid fear of Robinson Crusoe.

As the episodes of discovery continue, there is a tendency for them to become more outlandish. Towards the end of the book, they discover coffee, chocolate and tea in quick succession. Naturally, the father knows how to process all of them. They also encounter lions, wolves, elephants, hippopotami and orangutans. Another castaway – Emily – is found and joins them. After 10 years a British ship finds them. Some colonists aboard are so impressed with their achievements that they decide to settle rather than continue on to Sydney. The father and mother decide this is now home and they opt to stay. So do two of the sons, whereas the other two leave – not to return to Europe – but to see the world.
