When God gives you this understanding and instruction about how to treat such people, and you obey that instruction, it will bring blessing and encouragement not only to yourself but to others who are watching. And others will be watching!

From Henry: God’s Perspective on Our Opponents

Throughout my ministry I’ve had people, for one reason or another, who not only have opposed me but who sometimes have done me harm and even caused great pain.

I’ve always gone to God in prayer about these persons who seemed not to have the same heart as me, but whom I knew God loved as He loved me. Over time and much waiting and listening before the Lord, God has answered and given me understanding in these circumstances.

Some of these people were later directed by God to other places. God left others as co-laborers in the work where I was serving, while reminding me that they were His and He was working in them to further develop their walk with Him. With these people I was to be present for God to use me as He chose to bring them more fully into His purposes.

In all this, God reminded me of His great mercy, grace, and love to me, and how He expected me to share with them this same grace and forgiveness I’d received from Him.

Some of those who opposed me most later needed a job reference from me. I’m so glad that my heart was kept right before the Lord, and He could show me through much prayer how my life could be used with them.

Through these times God has given me the understanding and strength to honor Him and to glorify His name, which has become a testimony to others who faced similar circumstances.
