Rended by Helplessness
One reason I have been unaware at times that I was seeing Jesus was because the experience wasnât what I had thought it would be. I thought that seeing Jesus would send me into a kind of spiritual orbit. I thought it would result in a glorious, exhilarating, out-of-body ecstatic experience. Yet within seconds the thrill of a fresh encounter can morph from the heights of joy to the depths of depression. And the depression then seems to call into question the validity of the encounter. How could meeting Jesus make me feel so miserable and helpless?
It has been Isaiahâs testimony that has nudged me, as though to say, Anne, look. Heâs here. Right over there. Isaiah has made me aware that I have seen Jesus many more times than I have realized. And the hallmark of having had an encounter with Jesus is not necessarily ecstasy.
In the year before Isaiah saw the Lord, he had passionately preached a message to the people in his changing world, exhorting them to repent of the six following sins, in particular:
âWoe to you who add house to house and join field to field till no space is left and you live alone in the landâ (Isaiah 5:8).
âWoe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wineâ (5:11).
âWoe to those who draw sin along with cords of deceit, and wickedness as with cart ropesâ (5:18).
âWoe to those who call evil good and good evilâ (5:20).
âWoe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sightâ (5:21).
âWoe to those who are heroes at drinking wine and champions at mixing drinks, who acquit the guilty for a bribe, but deny justice to the innocentâ (5:22 â 23).
