ACT THREE

A wide avenue in an outlying part of the town. At the back of the stage the view is masked by a raised pavement, a few yards wide, with a railing along the edge. Steps, also with a railing, leading up from street to pavement in full view of the audience. This short flight of stone steps should be like those in some of the old streets of Paris, such as the Rue Jean de Beauvais.

Later, at the back, there is a setting sun, large and red, but without brilliance: the light does not come from there.

So at the back of the stage it is as though there were a kind of wall, four and a half or six feet high, according to the height of the stage. In the second half of the act this wall will have to open to reveal a long street in perspective with some buildings in the distance: the buildings of the Prefecture.

To the right of the stage, in the foreground, a small bench.

Before the curtain rises you can hear shouts of ‘Long live Mother Peep's geese! Long live Mother Peep's geese!’

The curtain goes up.

On the raised part of the stage, near the railing, is MOTHER PEEP, a fat soul resembling the CONCIERGE of Act II. She is addressing a crowd which is out of sight: all you can see are two or three flags, with the device of a goose in the middle. The white goose stands out against the green background of the flags.
