You're really ill.

ÉDOUARD: A glass of water.

BÉRENGER: At once. I'll go and fetch one. [Supporting him.] Lie down here . . . on the couch . . .

ÉDOUARD: [between coughs] My briefcase . . . [BÉRENGER bends down to pick up ÉDOUARD’s briefcase. In spite of his state of collapse, ÉDOUARD springs away from BÉRENGER to get hold of it himself.] No . . . let me . . . [He takes the briefcase from BÉRENGER’s hand, then, still weak and supported by BÉRENGER, he reaches the couch, still clinging to the briefcase, and lies down with BÉRENGER’s help, the briefcase at his side.]

BÉRENGER: You're soaked in perspiration . . .

ÉDOUARD: And frozen stiff as well, oh . . . this cough . . . it's awful . . .

BÉRENGER: You mustn't catch cold. Would you like a blanket?

ÉDOUARD: [shivering] Don't worry. It's nothing . . . it'll pass . . .

BÉRENGER: Settle down and rest.

ÉDOUARD: A glass of water.

BÉRENGER: At once . . . I'll fetch one.

[He hurries out to fetch a glass of water; you can hear the water running at the tap. Meanwhile ÉDOUARD raises himself on one elbow and stops coughing; with one anxious hand he checks the lock of his enormous black briefcase, and then, somewhat relieved, lies back again still coughing but not so loudly. ÉDOUARD must not give the impression he is trying to deceive BÉRENGER: he is really ill and he has other worries, his briefcase for example. He wipes his brow. BÉRENGER returns with the glass of water.]
