SUMMARY

The risks outlined here highlight two overarching ways in which brands can manage labor rights risk: by making up-front decisions that minimize the risk that emerges from the three factors and by putting in place controls that address risk after the fact. Almost all investors focus on the latter effort. But the work that companies do to avoid risk rather than manage it has far greater impact and says a great deal about a company's approach to management.

Investors should look favorably on companies that address social responsibility up front in supplier selection. Investors should use shareholder engagement as an opportunity to give support to the idea that social performance should be equal in weight to a supplier's ability to deliver a quality good, on time, at an appropriate price. In doing so, investors will help drive brands and their suppliers to more impactful efforts to protect the rights of vulnerable people who work in supply chains while protecting the security and maximizing the potential of their portfolios.
