At work doors are closed. Things are tense. According to Paul, an unabashed gossip, this is standard during planning and performance season: secret meetings and hushed conversations, whispered speculation about who or what is getting overhauled in the new fiscal year.

Jess is distracted. Anxious about her review. She keeps checking the leaderboard, because it makes her feel better, irrefutable evidence, displayed right there on the office wall, that she’s a top performer—or a nearly top performer, or at least, better than Dano. But the bigger distraction is Josh. She can’t stop thinking about him. Last night was like an earthquake and today she is still feeling aftershocks.

But he is nowhere to be found and when Jess asks Elizabeth when he’ll be in, she just shrugs and says, “Meetings?” Which isn’t really an explanation.

Jess pings Josh but he doesn’t respond, and this makes her feel anxious, snubbed, and a little insecure. All day she just fusses with her positions and waits for him to appear.

Eventually Elizabeth drops by and says, “The big guy wants to see you.”

Jess taps on Josh’s door, while her heart beats wildly.

He says, “Come in,” and explains, “Things have been really busy today.”

Jess can’t tell if this is an admission or an excuse. But then he gets up from behind his desk and stands close.

“I missed you,” he says gravely. “I’ve been thinking about you all day.”

Jess touches his wrist. “Really?”

He says, “Of course,” and he smells so good and Jess’s sense memory of last night is so strong that she wants to take off all her clothes right now.

She says, “Do you think we could get away with banging on your desk?”

He laughs, but says definitively, “We definitely could not,” and then: “But what are you doing tonight?”
