(This picture shows the circuit after disconnecting the next nearest connector. The test light went out after disconnecting the connector so this means we have found our problem area. The test light being off can only mean that the is no more active short and that the problem must be between the connector and the last thing we already disconnected.)

Going through the circuit’s wiring confirms that the short was between the connector and the light bulb from the circuit. When going through the wiring we find that the short to ground was caused by a power and a ground wire making metal to metal contact after the insulation had been chewed off by rodents.

The repair for this short simply required us to secure the wires away from each other and insulate them once more with electrical tape. You can also spray some anti rodent spray on the wires so they do not go back to chewing them again. If the wiring was found to be damaged it will need the damaged section to be replaced. After the repair is complete the circuit works perfectly and the fuse no longer blows. You should now be able to see how we can use the test light method to find electrical shorts to ground.

The Test Light Method is one of my favorite methods because you don’t have to keep returning to the breaker box or fuse box to reset a breaker, like in the circuit breaker method from before.

The Buzzer Method:

In this method you can similarly use a buzzer with long wires attached to it and then install it where the fuse or circuit breaker would go. If there is a short to ground then the buzzer will buzz loudly. The trick to finding a short to ground is to disconnect parts of the circuit one by one until the buzzing noise stops.
