THE FORMING OF IDOLS

In the Ten Commandments, God began with a fundamental instruction: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me…. I the LORD thy God, am a jealous God” (Exod. 20:3, 5, KJV).

Manifestations of the spirits of whoredom and perversion begin when you give yourself over to anything above the Lord. When you sell out your heart’s devotion to anything less than the Lord Jesus Christ, you prostitute your life. You are selling out for less than God’s best. The Bible reveals many reasons why whoredom and perversion gain entry into one’s life.

Parental failure

Abuse in any form has tragic results that can later cause a child to form wrong attachments, even into adulthood. For this reason let’s define child abuse as, “Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm.”3

We have led former prostitutes to deliverance through our ministry and discovered that most were victims of sexual abuse at the hand of their father, stepfather, or some other authority figure. Others were victims of date rape at one time or another. Satan gained entry through that abuse. Most homosexuals that I have counseled were also victims of early sexual encounters and abuse. Others simply had no male role model or were emotionally abused by fathers. Generational curses follow bad parental behavior.

Sexual problems in marriage

If a couple is not enjoying a healthy sex life, the deprived mate is placed under the attack of the enemy. Temptation can follow to draw the flesh into sin. The Bible says, “Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control” (1 Cor. 7:5).

There is a progression that occurs: wrong desires, enticement, wrong acts, sin, and then death. “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (James 1:14–15).

Today we can find sexual opportunity everywhere. The Internet has become a new place to solicit evil. Pornography is readily available, and chat rooms can be a breeding ground for illicit affairs.

Early exposure to sexually explicit material

The enemy wants to pollute the mind, and the younger the person, the better. Even children can access the worst of materials, and this early exposure can open the door to demonic spirits. Television, movies, and the Internet are portholes into the minds of both young and old, and there’s no escaping the necessity of each in our age of information. Students are assigned homework on the Internet, and their entire educational and social structure is built around information technology. Workers in every arena are working via the Internet. In other words, hiding from technology is not the answer.
