Day 47
PARENTS ARE THE WORST
When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!” David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.”
2 SAMUEL 6:20–22
The other night, I pulled into a parking spot to drop Caroline off at soccer practice. I was so worried about whether I had pulled in far enough that I ended up driving off the curb and back onto the street. Of course, several of Caroline’s teammates witnessed this exhibition of stellar driving skills, and she gave me a time-honored, “MOOOOOM!!!” It was one of those moments as a teenager when you feel like you’re the only human forced deal with parents who are clearly looking for new ways to humiliate you as they drive you all over town to your various practices and social engagements before returning home to cook you a well-balanced, nutritious dinner.
Parents are THE WORST.
The thing is, we never totally outgrow that part of us that dreads any sort of embarrassment. We all like to be cool, calm, and collected at all times. How else do you explain how mortified you feel when you trip on the sidewalk and feel the need to look around to see if anyone else saw and/or look at the spot where you tripped to make sure everyone sees that it clearly wasn’t your fault but rather faulty sidewalk construction?
I think that’s why I’ve always loved this moment in King David’s life. He had just returned the Ark of the Covenant to where it belonged and is rejoicing—to the point that he forgets for a moment that he’s the king and just dances down the street with pure joy before God. His wife, who happens to be King Saul’s daughter (pro tip: don’t marry the daughter of the king you replaced. In-law dynamics can be tricky enough), is disgusted by his behavior and mocks him. His reply is the best: “I will celebrate before the LORD. I will become even more undignified than this.” In other words, “I don’t care what people think of me because I will never stop worshipping my God.”
I so want that to be my heart! I don’t want to worry about what people think about how I choose to live my life, raise my child, and worship my God. I want to live a life fully abandoned to worshipping Him, honoring Him, and, yes, even occasionally dancing with joy to celebrate all He has done in my life. Don’t you? Let’s put on our dancing shoes.
