“All right, Lo. Congratulations, girl. I’ll call you,” Faye said, after dropping Lorene off.

“I’m happy for you, Lo. I’ll call you too,” Patrice said.

Faye waited until Lorene was in the house safely before driving off. “That ring was fierce, wa’n’t it?” She glanced over at Patrice then focused back on the road.

“Yes, ma’am. I’m glad it’s Keith. He is so nice. She couldn’t ask for anything bet—Faye! Watch out!”

A car from on the other side of the road crossed the median and was heading straight for them. Faye froze in complete fear, but the car came to a screeching halt and was just an inch away from colliding into Faye’s.

Patrice was holding her chest and breathing heavily to the point of hyperventilation, and Faye was in total shock.

A drunken man got out of the car and staggered to Faye’s side of the window and said, “Did I scare you, honey?” His words came out slurred, and drool ran down the side of his mouth. His eyes were bloodshot red, and it looked and smelled like he peed on himself.

“You damn right, you scared us, you drunken bastard!” Patrice shouted from the passenger’s side, practically lying in Faye’s lap to look the man in the face.

“I ain’t talking to you, witchee-poo.”

“We ain’t got to talk, but I will get out this car and kick your drunk ass!”

“Sshh. Be quiet and let the lady talk,” he slurred.

“I’m all right,” Faye finally forced from her lips.

“Okay, sweetie.”

At that he turned and stumbled back to his car.

“Faye, you need to cuss him out, get his license plate number, and press charges. Do something. Don’t let him get away with that. Is there a pen in your—”

“Patrice.”

“Glove compartment? You sitting there looking retarded! You need to be writing that fool’s license plate number down and report that sorry muthaf—”

“Patrice!”

“It don’t make no damn sense, his black ass out here this time of night tryin’a kill somebody! I ought to follow his ignorant ass.”

“Patrice!”

“What?!”

“I just want to go home.”

On the way home, they were both quiet.

When Faye pulled up in front of Glen’s door, Patrice held her hand and said, “Faye, call me when you get in,” but Faye didn’t call.
