Chapter 9: Kennedy

“Pst, Skylar, wake up.”

Skylar blinked her eyes open, then scanned the dark room, a look of confusion adorning her face. An adorable look that made me want to crawl on top of her and kiss her senseless, but when I had been woken up by my stomach growling a half hour earlier, I had devised a different plan. “What’s going? What time is it?” she asked sleepily.

“It’s midnight, and I’m taking you on a date now.”

Skylar yawned and stretched out, putting her naked body on display and making me almost forget about what I had planned. “You’re taking me on a date at midnight?”

I jumped out of bed before I was tempted to change my mind. “Yes! We haven’t eaten dinner yet.”

“You want us to eat dinner at midnight?”

Could you stop being adorable? “Yes. That’s what we’re doing, so don’t fight me on it. Just get dressed and grab your camera. I’ll take care of the rest.”

I quickly put on clothes, then ran downstairs to prepare food for us. I knew I had some extra time since Skylar would be moving slowly, but I didn’t want to risk ruining the surprise. I made sandwiches, then grabbed two bags of chips and two apples, and put them in my backpack, along with a beach blanket. By the time I was done, Skylar was slowly making her way downstairs, so I skipped over to meet her. “Ready to go?”

Skylar yawned again. “I’m ready to find out how you have this much energy right after waking up.”

I took her hand and twirled her around. “I have this much energy because I’ve been up for a half hour, and I’m excited for our date.”

Skylar steadied me by placing her hands on my cheeks. “You are way too cute.” She brought her lips to mine and kissed me hard. My body was alight with feelings I was afraid to speak out loud as I moved my hands to her hips and deepened the kiss. We kissed for what could have been seconds or hours, time a complete afterthought as I lost myself in Skylar.

I finally forced myself to pull back, kissing her one more time before breaking the contact completely. “We better go. Our date is waiting.”

I took Skylar’s hand and led her away from the house and toward the beach. We crossed the now dark boardwalk, and Skylar squeezed my hand tighter when she realized where we were going. “I don’t think we’re supposed to be here,” she whispered, as if speaking any louder was going to set off an alarm.

I pointed to the sign leading on to the beach. “The sign says ‘no sleeping on the beach.’ Technically, we’re not sleeping. Plus, if everything I read online is true, they clean this part of the beach first, so they are probably already done. No one is going to bother us if we behave.”

“Well, gee, where’s the fun in that?” Skylar joked, and I could feel her body start to relax beside me.
