Raven had just taken a bite of her breakfast bagel when she heard the front door open and close. It was too early for Lynn to arrive, and it peeved her to have her quiet time interrupted prematurely. She hurriedly chewed and swallowed as she motored to the landing, where she glowered down the stairs. Lynn appeared alone, wringing her hands in agitation.

Dread rippled through Raven, fearing that the law had already caught up with Lynn and had taken Destiny away, but she quickly discarded the thought. First, she would have gotten an alert on her phone if anyone had come to the gate, and second, they would have hauled Lynn off to jail.

So, what the fucking hell was going on?

Raven didn’t realize she was scowling until Lynn tentatively said, “I can already tell you’re upset with me, but I have an emergency, and I have to go into town this morning.”

Even though she didn’t feel calm, Raven forced her facial muscles to go lax and asked with caution, “What kind of emergency? Is something wrong with Angel?”

“No, she’s fine, and waiting in the Jeep for me. But Cleo’s sick, and I need to get her to a Pet Hospital in Ellensburg right away. She’s running a fever.”

It was easy for her to read the stress on Lynn’s features. Worry lines creased the corners of Lynn’s eyes that were a brownish sage green flecked with gold at the center. Raven studied those eyes, puzzled and confused because she’d thought Lynn’s eyes were a grayish green. The sound of a throat clearing refocused her attention and realized she’d miss something by the tight frown on Lynn’s face. “What was that?”

“I asked if I could have the morning off? I don’t know how long I’ll be, but I promise to get back as soon as possible and put in a full day’s work. I’m hoping Cleo just has a urinary or bladder infection and not something more serious, like a kidney stone. She’s had those before, and they are as painful for a dog to pass as they are for humans.”

Raven couldn’t help but feel piqued. She hated disruptions in her daily routine. Her annoyance instantly vanished as the whole of what Lynn said sank in, replaced by panic. She couldn’t let Lynn take Destiny into town with her. If anyone spotted the little girl with Lynn, the repercussions would be devastating.

“Leave the chi…I mean leave Angel with me,” Raven urged. “I will keep her entertained while you take Cleo to the vet.”

Lynn’s eyes blinked rapidly for several seconds, before she uttered, “Ah…thank you. That would be very helpful.”

Thinking back to Creirwy’s advice last night, Raven offered, “Angel’s a well-behaved little girl and easily occupied, leaving you unencumbered to deal with Cleo’s sickness. I am certain you will not shirk your duties; therefore, I have no issue giving you some free time this morning.”

That look was back in Lynn’s eyes again, minus the eye blink, and Raven would have given a lot to know what she was thinking.
