When Zoe woke the next day, Alex was still asleep. The house was empty, and so silent that she could hear the wind howling outside. It made the whole place seem colder and lonelier, despite the decorations that were designed to do exactly the opposite.

After she’d made herself a morning cup of coffee, Zoe found herself staring out of the window at the town. The early morning light was that pale blue that existed when the world was caught between night and day – the kind of light that made Zoe feel like she was watching a movie. The windows of a few of the houses below the hill were lit up, blinking in the distance like tiny little beacons on the horizon.

As she stood there, Zoe found herself wondering about the people inside. What kind of people voluntarily picked up their lives and decided to move out to the middle of nowhere to be a part of a community like this?

Alex had told her that selecting the people was the second part of the equation that made her vision work. First was the design and build and second was the selection of the people themselves and it was a concept that she had made work across the globe; across cultures. It blew Zoe’s mind. Alex inspired her. Intrigued her and there was no doubt Zoe was keen to impress her. To get this woman’s intention was something everyone craved for and Zoe smiling ruefully, knew she was no different. Finishing her coffee, she knew what she had to do. She needed to understand the people that made up the community. Perhaps that would give her a greater insight into Alex.

On her electronic pad she jotted down two questions; What kinds of people lived here in Vintergrön, and what kinds of people might move into the Paramount Theater? What kinds of people should she have in mind when she was fine tuning elements of the design?

With those questions on her mind, Zoe pulled on her coat, hat and gloves, and picked up the car keys to the car in the front drive. She left a note for Alex explaining where she had gone somewhere she knew she would find it (in front of the coffee machine), and then she headed off down the hill and into the town.

By the time she arrived in town people were awake, and starting to move around. She saw
