Humboldt Bay has also been an important center for recreation. Here Sea Scouts are just finishing a race on the bay. Hammond Lumber Mill at Samoa is seen in the background.

The Humboldt coast, with its fogs, rocks, and dangerous currents, was hazardous for shipping. Five lighthouses were built along Humboldt’s stretch of coast with two more just to the north in Del Norte County. On calm days, the Trinidad light made a pleasant seashore excursion.

Table Bluff, an aptly named rise at the end of Humboldt Bay’s South Spit, housed a light from 1892 to the 1950s. Afterwards, the lighthouse was moved to Woodley Island where it now serves as a beacon for tourists. It’s multifaceted lens is displayed at the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum, which is located on Eureka’s First Street within sight of this redwood tower.
