TransActive Grid is a great app for promoting environmentally-conscious practices. It is the result of a collaboration between Siemens and LO3 energy. It allows residents of a particular area to either transfer or sell the excess renewable energy that they have stored to their neighbors. The exchange is done automatically and provides a cheap and highly efficient way for energy transfer within communities and areas that use solar panels. At the moment, it is currently running in Brooklyn, New York.

Other examples include ElectricChain, which is using Ethereum blockchain technology to work with solar energy partners to help encourage more people to use solar energy.
