“Now.” Urban was struggling with the symaster. Persephone jumped forward, mentally reciting the mantras Urban had made her say, and dumped the vial of angel fire on the creature’s back. It shrieked, and she darted out of the way. Urban shoved it to the side, and they stood together to ensure the demon perished. Once it quit thrashing, the Mist did its thing, transcending the remains into the Gloom. Live demons couldn’t run around long before the realm expelled them.

To be sure, she looked over her shoulder. A furtive move that was becoming second nature. Once she started doing it, she recalled countless times she’d witnessed warriors in the realm do the same. A quick look around. A casual scan. Moments when their gazes flitted left, then right.

She was becoming one of them.

They’d been hunting for a few nights, taking only symasters and a pair of sylphs that had made the mistake of traveling in such a small group. Urban had done the fighting, and she’d been the angel-fire wielder. She wasn’t desensitized, but each time was easier. Her hands had already quit shaking.

“Good job.” Urban glanced down at himself. Symaster blood stained his clothing, and his boots were coated with guts. He wiped the gore off on the thick grass under their feet.

The longer she was here, the less she was weirded out by the place. It wasn’t a place of peace—it just existed—but there was a sense of peace in that. A place that had nothing to prove but to be itself.

“Ready to call it a night?” he asked. They’d been returning to the safe house, changing and cleaning up, and then going back out. Nothing had happened between them since their time in the garage. She was getting restless.

“Yes.” Their car was still at the casino. They’d have to catch a ride in the light of day and find another place to hunt.

He cocked an elbow. They didn’t have to hang on to each other, but entering the realm ensured they’d arrive together instead of transcending into the other person. She’d full-body smashed into Urban the other night, not in a good way.

She was growing restless. When they weren’t out hunting, Urban made her sit around her bedroom with her wings out since she wasn’t used to a long-term morph. He updated his boss, checked in with his team, and they slept—in separate rooms. The last few days, he’d been nothing more than her mentor, and everything about that was grating on her nerves.

She wasn’t ready to claim eternity with him, but it’d be nice to rely on him. Not as her savior. Not as her teacher. Not even as a buddy who exchanged bad jokes with her. She wanted him to herself. She wanted to be something to someone.

Maybe he was ashamed of her? She dwelled on the thought as she hooked her arm through his and stepped through the Mist and into the dry air of Nevada. Urban opened the door for her and she entered.
