Chapter 10

Dixie

Well…this was a mistake.

I finger a hole in the hem of my tank top as we’re escorted from the funeral home to a stretch limo that barely fits in the driveway. Adam shoots me a pensive, untrusting stare, but with Ever’s arm over my shoulders, I feel invincible. Lily keeps asking me questions, then staring at me pointedly, as if she’s expecting a certain response. It’s starting to make me uncomfortable. Adam opens the door for me to slip inside the limo and we barely settle in our seats before she starts in again.

“Look out the window, Dixie.”

I knit my brows together in confusion. “Why? We’re still in the driveway, there’s nothing to see that I haven’t seen a million times…” She gets weirder and weirder by the minute. I scoot closer to Ever as Lily and Adam exchange a look that I can’t decipher.

“Will you hand me that bottle of champagne, Dixie?” she asks, and I raise a brow at her. She’s sitting across from me in the limo, the champagne is right by her feet, while it’s about four feet away from me.

“What kind of game are you playing, Lily?” I snap, and Adam tries to hide a grin behind his hand as he scratches the side of his nose. Lily clenches her fists over her knees, staring at me as hard as she can.

“Blink!” she demands, and my eyes grow wide.

“Ever…” I whisper. “I think your brother’s girlfriend is having some kind of episode…is there a vampire doctor nearby?”

Ever doesn’t get a chance to answer, because right then Adam bursts into a fit of laughter. Lily’s jaw drops and she rolls her eyes dramatically before slouching in her seat with her arms crossed.

“What’s going on with you guys?” Ever asks, entangling his fingers with mine protectively.

“Humans are compelled to do anything Lily says,” Adam explains.

“Up until I met you in the skyscraper, no human has ever been able to ignore me,” Lily continues. “I was trying to figure out if it was a fluke or if you really are immune.”

“My grandma had a saying when I was a kid.” I grin at Lily. “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Next time, try saying please.” I lift Ever’s arm back over my shoulder and scoot closer, leaning my head on his chest although I don’t dare close my eyes. These vampires clearly can’t be trusted. Compared to Ever? They're weird.

With Ever’s arms around me, I let my mind wander a bit. I’m finally getting the ultimate prize, I’m going inside the castle. All my surveillance, all my hard work plotting and planning, and I’m about to be there. See them all up close. Maybe even see the patriarch himself? I shiver with anticipation and Ever rubs my arms gently. I’m getting everything I ever wanted, and I feel horrible for being excited while my sister lays dead in the city somewhere.

“Are you cold?” he asks, and I shake my head.

He smiles, a gentle smile he’s not forcing or faking.
