Chapter

Twelve

AUDREY

My body ached. Not from the ground, not from sticks brushing against my skin or rocks digging into my flesh. No. My body didn’t ache from what had happened on the forest floor. I felt numb to all of that. I could barely even remember it.

My body ached from something far worse. From me believing. Why did I let myself believe? I shouldn’t have. I shouldn’t have given in to that moment or to that breath. I should have walked away and ignored the bond. People could do that, right? It wasn’t unheard of for mates to leave one another.

I stopped where I stood, in between the buildings of the den as people milled about, giving me strange looks but not coming near.

Because, of course, they didn’t come near to help me. I knew I must look a fright, with dirt on my chin and agony in my gaze, but nobody came to me. Nobody asked why I was in pain and why I felt like I was dying. Because I had pushed them away for so long. I might be the Beta of this Pack, but I was there for them, and I wouldn’t let them be there for me. I knew that. Because I didn’t want them to feel as if they owed me anything. Because I hadn’t been enough for them when it mattered, so why did I deserve them now?

“Audrey?” Dara asked as she came forward, her gaze solemn. I looked into those hazel eyes and swallowed hard.

“Hi, Dara. Is there something I can help you with?”

“You don’t need to be the one that helps all the time. Can we help you?”

My lion bumped me at that, as if Dara was finally voicing her thoughts, but I ignored her. “No. I’m fine. I was just meeting Chase.”

“If you’re sure. And if you need any help with what is currently in the dungeon, let me know.”

My brows rose, my lion at attention. “I didn’t know you knew that we were dealing with that.”

Dara smiled softly and shrugged. “I’m a witch. And you know what kind of witch I am.”

I did, and it wasn’t something she spoke about often. Dara had her secrets and wasn’t part of the coven at the moment for a reason.

“So you can feel it?” I asked, honestly curious. Because if she could this close, that could be helpful for later. Or perhaps I was thinking too much about it.

“I can tell it’s something. But I’m not sure. My magic wants to search out and understand more, but I also know that it could be an issue if I do. It’s an unknown, and I need to remain in control.”

I nodded, completely understanding.

“As it is, Cruz told me about it.”

My brows shot up. “Oh. Well, that’s good. Have you seen it? What do you think?”

“I didn’t get to see it yet. I will. Chase wants me to, eventually. After you’re through. So please leave enough for the rest of us. And in the mood that you’re in, at least from what I can feel, that’s a question, isn’t it?”

I smiled.
