We must distinguish between burdens

2. Somebody says, “Well, did the apostle speak all that obscurely, that you should try to explain what these burdens are, or how they are to be borne for one another?” There is a problem there, which forces us to distinguish between burdens. Right in this very same section of the reading you have this statement: But each one will bear his own burden (Gal 6:5). So it’s already crossed your minds: if each one will carry his own burden, how can he say, Carry your burdens for each other? The only answer is that we must distinguish between burdens, or the apostle will be thought to be contradicting himself. I mean, it isn’t in some quite different place, not in another letter, after all, not after all much earlier or later in this letter, but in this very same place, so that these same words come next to each other, that he stated both things; both that each one will carry his own burden, and that he urged and exhorted us to carry our burdens for each other.
