Of Austrian Jewish parentage, the poet Erich Fried (1921–1988) fled Austria after the Anschluss and stayed in Britain for the rest of his life but played an active role in West Germany’s cultural life. Alain Geismar (born 1939) is a physicist and activist who played a leading role in the protests in Paris in May 1968, as did the Trotskyite politician Alain Krivine (born 1941).
