CHAPTER V

Approaching the

Mundane World

“Pure love is a state of Being. Whereas everyone is running around trying to get love, it is found in giving. When a person begins to lose the idea of his own personality through concern for others, he will attract a like response to himself. The outgoing force of the soul in action brings freedom to the lower states of mind. The instinctive person is ordinarily so preoccupied with his own self, so wrapped up in his own shell, that he cannot give a thought to the welfare of another. He cannot give anything of himself. Such a person usually feels sorry for himself and finds other people unloving and unresponsive. He is still far from any realization of the Self within.”

EMPATHIC ANECDOTE

Absorption and Lightwork

A number of years ago, it was time for my newly adopted temple cat Uba to have a checkup with the veterinarian. (My other fluffy baby, the beautiful black Maine Coon named Fizzgig, was probably just being born around this time.) The ringworm that Uba had on her skin was starting to spread, and it seemed the right time to make an appointment for a checkup and get some medication prescribed to stop the fungus from spreading any further. The appointment went well, the charge was minimal, and the solution was simple. Cat and medicine in hand, I headed for the car and stuck both inside.

“Great job, Uba Nabibi Mudada. You were so good for the doctor!” Just then, I noticed a dog behaving strangely outside of the clinic. A thirty-something fellow with sunglasses snubbed out a cigarette and stood before the dog. I couldn’t hear what he was saying. The dog had short, brown fur and looked to be about sixty pounds. The dog’s head was slanted ninety degrees to the left, and his right eye was missing. He kept walking in circles, one after another, tongue hanging out over bits of missing hair. I was somewhat reassured when I noticed that the dog was all smiles, so to speak; the doggie grin he wore was from ear to ear.

“Is he okay?” I said as I walked up to the gentleman.

“No … no, he’s not.” The man’s sorrow was palpable. “This is it.”

“What do you … oh …”

“Yep,” the man said, his voice trembling. His sadness couldn’t be contained.“It’s the end of the road. He lost his eye a while back, and he’s just disoriented and … he’s done for.”

When I instinctively placed my hand on the fellow’s left shoulder, a feeling of emotional pain took over—a deep, mournful, soul-level type of pain. The gentleman’s canine was clearly a beloved companion.

He started to weep a bit more, not trying as hard to hide the sadness. It seemed like he was the type of fellow who normally hid his emotions, a sad reality for so many men in American culture. He probably didn’t like to burden others with the weight of real emotion.
